Thermador cooktop and rangetop repair
Independent Thermador induction and gas cooktop repair in Fleming Island, Clay County FL. Coil boards, cooling fans, ignition, simmer control and glass.
Symptoms we see
- Induction zone reports no pan with a pan sitting on it
- Cooling fan running loudly, or running long after the surface is off
- One zone dead while the rest of the surface works normally
- Gas burner clicking continuously after the flame has lit
- Low simmer setting cycling hard instead of holding
- Touch surface reading phantom presses or ignoring input
- Surface shutting itself down mid-cook and restarting
Thermador builds two very different cooking surfaces, and they fail for completely different reasons. Induction fails electronically. Gas fails mechanically. Getting the diagnosis right starts with knowing which conversation you are in.
Induction: it is a power supply problem until proven otherwise
An induction zone is an inverter driving a coil. Behind the glass sits a coil board, a set of power devices, thermistors watching the coil and the glass, and a fan whose entire job is to keep those power devices inside their temperature limits. Almost every induction complaint traces back to one of those four things.
“No pan detected” with a pan sitting on the zone is the most common call. It is occasionally a genuine cookware problem — an aluminium or copper pan, or a base that has warped away from the glass — and a magnet on the pan base settles that in five seconds. When the pan is right, the fault is on the board side: a detection circuit that has drifted, or a coil that has lost continuity.
A surface that runs for a while and then shuts a zone down is thermal. Either the cooling fan has slowed or its intake is blocked, or the thermistor is reading correctly and the power stage really is overheating. Cabinet installations matter here: an induction cooktop needs a clear intake path underneath it, and a drawer packed to the ceiling directly below the unit will produce intermittent shutdowns that look electronic and are not.
In Clay County there is a third cause we see more than most: storm damage. Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year go through kitchens on this side of Doctors Lake, and a near-strike transient will take out a coil board while leaving the interface lit. Two zones failing in the same afternoon is a supply-side story, not a coincidence, and we measure the supply before we condemn a board.
Induction needs the circuit it was specified for
A full-width induction cooktop draws serious current and wants its own high-amperage circuit. Older kitchens on the island were frequently wired for a gas cooktop and a downdraft, which is nothing like the same load. When we are called to an induction surface that browns out under a heavy load, or trips at boost, the first measurement is at the terminal block, not inside the appliance. If the answer is that the circuit is undersized, we will say so and hand it to an electrician rather than sell you an appliance repair that will not fix it.
Gas: burners, ignition and the low end
Thermador’s gas burners use a star-shaped port pattern that spreads flame across a wider footprint than a conventional ring, and the low-end simmer capability is one of the main reasons people buy them. Both of those characteristics depend on clean ports and correct gas pressure.
Continuous clicking after a burner has lit is nearly always a wet or fouled igniter, or a burner cap that has been reseated a millimetre off its locating pins. It is a five-minute fix that people live with for months. A simmer that cycles hard instead of holding a steady low flame is usually a valve or an orifice matched to the wrong fuel — a unit converted from natural gas to propane, or converted back, without the conversion being finished properly.
Yellow, lazy flame tips point at air shutter setting or supply pressure. We measure manifold pressure rather than adjusting by eye, because “it looks better now” is not a diagnosis.
Glass, and when it is over
A cracked or chipped induction glass top ends the conversation. There is no repair for the glass surface, and continuing to run a cracked induction top puts liquid onto live electronics. We will tell you that on the phone rather than charge for a visit to say it in person.
Every visit is a flat-rate diagnostic, credited toward the repair, with a written estimate before any part is ordered. Parts are genuine OEM.
What owners said about cooktops and rangetops
4.5 out of 5, across 27 customer reviews. Each one below is a single visit, in the words of the person who paid for it.
The touch surface was registering presses nobody had made. He lifted the glass, found moisture wicking under the edge from a failed seal, dried it out and resealed it. No phantom presses in the weeks since.

One zone kept reporting no pan with a pan sitting right on it. On two of them the pan really was the problem and on the third it was a tired sensor. He was straight about which was which instead of selling me a board.
Imogen S.
Two induction zones went dead after a storm while the other two carried on. He measured the supply first, then found one coil board had taken the hit. Swapped that board alone rather than the whole surface.
