Storm season and the control board
Why north Florida storm season takes out appliance control boards in Clay County kitchens, what the symptoms look like, and what is worth doing before June.
This part of north Florida sees roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year. Most of them do nothing. The ones that matter do not need a direct strike — a near-strike couples enough energy into the branch circuit to take out a low-voltage board while leaving the lights on and the breaker set.
That is the part people find hard to accept. “The power never even went out” is the most common sentence we hear on these calls, and it is entirely consistent with what happened. A transient lasting microseconds does not trip a breaker. Breakers respond to sustained overcurrent; they are not surge devices and were never meant to be.
What it looks like from the kitchen
The pattern is recognisable once you have seen it a few times:
- A display that lights but does not respond, or responds to some zones only.
- An appliance that powers up, runs for a few seconds, and shuts itself down.
- A touch interface reading phantom presses, or ignoring input entirely.
- One induction zone dead while the rest of the surface works normally.
- Two appliances on the same circuit failing in the same afternoon.
That last one is the tell. A single appliance failing is a component. Two on one circuit failing together is the circuit, and the diagnosis has to start outside the appliance.
Why modern equipment is more exposed than old equipment
A resistive element and a mechanical thermostat are almost impossible to damage this way. A variable-speed compressor driven by an inverter, an induction power stage, or a capacitive touch interface running on a few volts is a different proposition. The more of the appliance that is silicon, the more of it a transient can reach.
This is not an argument against modern appliances — the efficiency and the control are real. It is an argument for protecting the circuits they sit on, because the failure mode has changed and the protection has not kept up in most houses.
What we check, in order
Supply voltage and ground integrity, before condemning anything. A board replaced into a bad ground is a board you will replace again, usually within a year. We measure line-to-neutral, line-to-ground and neutral-to-ground at the appliance, under load rather than at rest, because a marginal neutral only shows itself when current is flowing.
Then the low-voltage side. Most appliance control architectures split into a power board and a user interface board joined by a low-voltage bus. A transient frequently kills one and leaves the other apparently healthy. Replacing the pair when one would do is a common way to be overcharged, and it is avoidable with a measurement.
Then the interface. Capacitive touch panels fail in ways that mimic board faults — dead segments, phantom presses, unresponsive zones — and they are usually the cheaper part.
We do not order a board until the supply side has been measured. That sequence is the difference between a repair that holds and a repair that comes back.
Long service runs collect more of it
Houses set well back on large parcels — the river side of Fleming Island, the Doctors Lake frontage, the wooded lots — sit at the end of longer runs, and a longer run is a better collector. If your house is at the end of a long overhead drop, the exposure is genuinely higher than a house in the middle of a subdivision street.
What is worth doing before June
A whole-home surge device at the panel, plus point-of-use protection on the kitchen circuits, is the only intervention that reliably changes this outcome. Panel-level devices clamp the large events; point-of-use devices handle what gets past them and what is generated inside the house. Neither alone is as good as both.
It is electrician work rather than appliance work, and we will say so rather than sell you something adjacent to it.
Note that none of this is covered by any appliance warranty, ours included — surge damage is excluded essentially everywhere, by everyone. That is exactly why the protection is worth more than the repair.
