Thermador dishwashers are quiet, which is a design achievement and a diagnostic problem. A machine you cannot hear is a machine that gives you almost no information about what it is doing, so the fault usually announces itself only at the end of the cycle — wet dishes, standing water, or grit.

Standing water is a path problem

Water left in the sump is not automatically a pump. The drain path runs sump → drain pump → hose → high loop or air gap → disposer or standpipe, and a blockage anywhere on that run produces the same symptom.

We work the path from the far end backwards, because the far end is where the problem usually is and it costs nothing to check. A disposer installed without the knockout plug removed will stop a dishwasher draining from day one — that is a genuinely common finding on kitchens that have had the disposer replaced. Next, the drain hose high loop: without it, the machine siphons back what it just pumped out. Then the check valve, then the filter stack, then the pump itself.

The filter stack is worth naming separately because it is the one part of a dishwasher an owner is meant to clean. If it has never been removed, it will be holding a compacted mat of debris that restricts everything downstream. That is maintenance, not a repair, and we will show you how to do it rather than book a return visit for it.

Gritty on the bottom rack, clean on the top

That is a lower spray arm complaint. Either the arm is not turning, or it is turning and its jets are blocked, or the diverter that alternates pressure between the upper and lower arms has failed and the lower arm never gets its share. Spin the lower arm by hand with the racks out: if it binds, the bearing or the hub is the fault. If it spins freely and the machine still leaves grit, the diverter and the circulation pump are the next stops.

A blocked jet is nearly always a physical intruder rather than a deposit — a seed, a shard of label paper, a fragment of glass or a chip of bone that has come through the filter stack and lodged in the arm. Clearing it takes minutes. Finding out how it got past the filters matters more: a fine screen that has been left out after cleaning, or one that is not fully seated in its housing, will keep feeding the same debris to the same arm until it is put back properly.

Drying, and the difference between wet and undried

Thermador’s upper-tier dishwashers dry with a mineral desiccant that pulls moisture out of the cabinet and releases it as heat on the next cycle, rather than by running a heating element. It is efficient and it is very effective, and when it stops working the complaint is specific: loads that used to come out dry now come out damp, with no other change in behaviour.

Before condemning anything, we check the obvious things that mimic a drying failure — rinse aid dispenser empty or set to zero, a cycle selection that skips the drying phase, plastics loaded where they will always stay wet, and the door being left closed for an hour after the cycle ends. Roughly half of “the dryer is broken” calls end at the rinse aid dispenser.

Leaks and doors

A leak at the front-left corner is usually the door seal or the tub-to-door interface, and it is worth knowing that a dishwasher can leak from the vent rather than the seal when it is overfilled with the wrong detergent. Excess suds push water where water is not meant to go, and no part replacement fixes that.

A door that falls open instead of holding position has a broken door spring, cable or pulley. On an integrated machine carrying a heavy custom panel, that assembly is under real load, and a door left in that state will eventually damage the hinge mounts. It is worth fixing early.
